From the opening scenes of the play it is made clear that these two children of the feuding families were destined to fall in love and eventually die together, but was it the actions of their friends that brought about their deaths or could it be that their deaths were just inevitable? Most people choose to believe that they have a sense of responsibility and can control their own lives; they suppose that their problems are caused by their own actions or by those influencing them. In my opinion though, Romeo and Juliet had no control what so ever, fate brought them together their lives were already mapped out for them and there was nothing to impair this. Romeo and Juliet could not have avoided coming in contact with each other, they were brought together by uncontrollable circumstances (fate). There were many events that conspired against Romeo and Juliet, for example the family feud. The brawl in Act 1 Scene 1 is ceased by Prince Escales who said If you ever disturb our streets again, Your lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace. However the Prince failed to stay loyal to his word, Romeos banishment and the fate involved with it is a prime factor in the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. In Act1 Scene1 the Princes words were quite the contrary. Was it intentional that a man of such high standard would go back on his word? However, if Mercutio had not taunted Tybalt in town whilst out with Romeo and Benvolio, Romeo would never of got into his fight with Tybalt and therefore would not have been banished. Perhaps, however, the fight initiated by Mercutio that hapless day was inevitable: could it be that Romeo was somehow destined to be exiled? Romeos famous words in Act3 Scene1 signify the point in the play where the tragedy really begins. His exile causes Juliet great sorrow, greater than if he had been executed. Her parents, Lord and Lady Capulet were oblivious to the fact that Juliet was pining for Romeo and not Tybalt. They did not even consider her feelings when arranging her marriage to Paris, but why were they so determined? Was it because they loved their daughter and wanted to see her happy? No, Capulet only agreed to the marriage because Paris was of a higher status than them, so it would increase theirs in turn. Capulet did not care whether Juliet loved him or not, for she did not have a choice of whom she was to be married to. As a consequence of Capulets determination he drove his daughter to her own death. Was this deliberate or just fate? In my opinion it was fate, which caused the deaths of Romeo and Juliet. In the Oxford Dictionary fate is the inevitable destiny or necessity destined term of life; doom. Basically fate can be described as a preplanned sequence of events influencing ones life. Fate was the sole contributor to the deaths of the young lovers but there are more possibilities that I have to consider before I make my final decision. Chance and coincidence played a small part in the play, during the course of Act1 Scene2, the contrary happened, and happened by chance. As Romeo and Benvolio were nearing a public area a Capulet servant stopped them. After Romeo had read the guest list to the Capulet party Benvolio suggested that to relieve himself from the sadness for Rosaline, Romeo should attend the party and compare Rosalines beauty to the other female guests. An example of coincidence is evident here. If Rosaline had not been attending, Benvolio would not have encouraged Romeo attend which lead to him meeting Juliet. The encounter with the servant in the city set off an unlikely chain of events, but why out of all the people did he pick Romeo and Benvolio? Romeo and Juliets feelings were very strong, or so they thought. But why were they in such a hurry to get married when they knew their love could never be accepted as their families despised each other? Surely they knew deep down that their love was bound to end in tragedy but they were to afraid to talk about the consequences that their love could cause. Personally I believe in love at first sight but Romeo and Juliet rushed into marriage without knowing whether the feelings that they were experiencing were true or lasting. I think that in a way they did love each other, their love appeared to be unconditional because they would rather die than lose each other. Romeo and Juliet did love each other, their love contrasts with the hate of the feud. In Act1 Scene1 Romeo thought that he was in love with Rosaline but that was just a mere infatuation with her beauty not Rosaline herself, but when he spies Juliet for the first time he says: Did my heart love till now? Forswear it, sight! For I neer saw true beauty till this night. This shows that Romeos emotions are not deep: he is quickly moved to another girl or infatuation, Juliets beauty shows his fickle nature. Although I think that Romeo does love Juliet I do not think that his feelings are a strong as he makes out. Their first meeting is heavy with religious imagery, If I profane with my unworthtiest hand This holy shrine, the gentle sin is this, My lips, two blushing pilgrims, ready stand To smooth that rough touch with a tender kiss. The religious language used in this scene makes Romeo and Juliet sound pure and innocent. Romeo sneaks into the Capulet gardens after the party, he is flirting with the possibility of being caught and killed just to see Juliet. He overhears her declaration of love, they accept the social isolation of their love. This proves that they do not love each other that much because surely if they did then they would confess everything to their families but they clearly do not think that their love would survive if they did. Juliet has a heavy premonition when she says: I have no joy of this contract tonight, It is too rash, too unadvised, too sudden. The feud affects everything, Romeo and Juliet know that they were taking an almighty risk but they cannot help the way they feel or can they? The feud is inescapable, but Tybalt appears to be the only member of both families that is keeping the hatred alive. Even Capulet ordered Tybalt tolerate Romeo at their ball because he did not want Tybalt causing havoc. He shall be endured What, goodman boy, I say he shall, go to! He thinks that he is defending the honor of his family; he kills to defend his name. Tybalt does not think before he acts, Romeo is banished because of his sneaky actions. How can Romeo allow Mercutios death to go unavenged? The feud is purely about honor and money; they fight to defend their family name and that is all that matters. Capulet and Montague do not care who they hurt in the process, as long as they are not humiliated. The actions of some characters greatly influence the course of events in the play, the Nurse, Juliets committed servant who treated her almost like her daughter, (this might be because she lost her own daughter) changed the course of events by going behind Lord and Lady Capulets backs. If the Nurse had not preformed Juliets bidding and acted as her messenger, it is possible that Juliet would have given up on the idea of marriage to Romeo and the couples death would have been averted. However, there is a strong possibility that regardless of the Nurses influence, the couple would still have gone ahead with their doomed marriage once they had fallen in love. Friar Lawrence, Romeos confidant and assistant of Juliet in her final plan, changed the course of events by helping the young couple in their plans to marry and assisting Juliet in her scheme to be with Romeo once again. He is shown collecting plants and herbs to ensure that the audience knows about his knowledge and authority of the properties of plants when he gives Juliet the sleeping draught. If the Friar had not agreed to marry Romeo and Juliet, it is again possible that they would have given up on the idea of being together. On the other hand, Romeo and Juliet had been fated to marry and would have partaken in the ceremony one way or another no matter what the Friars decision. The Friar is portrayed as a spiritual guide to Romeo and a surrogate parent whom Romeo can confide his most private thoughts. The Friar only agreed to the marriage of Romeo and Juliet because he believed that their love could help impair the feud. In one respect Ill thy assistant be. For this alliance may so happy prove, To turn your households rancour to pure love. Friar Lawrence and the Nurse both act as instruments of fate. Juliets parents, Lord and Lady Capulet changed the course of the play by being so persistent and self-obsessed, they do love Juliet in their own way but they care more about status and money than they do about their own daughter. If Capulet had not agreed to the marriage of Paris and his daughter, Juliet would never have been forced to take such drastic actions that lead to her and Romeos deaths. So why did Romeo and Juliet die? Was it down to chance, no. Adolescent passion, slightly. The feud, partly. The actions of the Nurse, Friar Lawrence and the Capulets are mainly to blame. In my opinion though, the soul contributor to the tragic deaths of Romeo and Juliets death was fate. Nowadays, most people do not have much time for the theory of fate. They like to think that they can control their own destiny. But what if all our actions are already planned out, and no matter what we do the ultimate consequence will be the same? Some people argue that Shakespeare wanted us to believe this was the case with Romeo and Juliet.

Charlotte Brontes Aspects Of The Gothic In †Jane Eyre†, Charlotte Bronte places her narrator and central character in the middle of dramatic events. One of these is at the start of the novel when Jane is trapped in the Red Room and the next is when she attends Thornfield Hall to work as a governess. Charlotte Bronte uses certain features of gothic literature to create a tense atmosphere for the reader. Jane Eyre is sent to live with her unfeeling aunt and abusive cousins, after her parents sadly passed away. Jane Eyre leads a very unhappy life as the people whom she grows up with do not treat her like family and blame her for any trouble. Now, Jane Eyre is locked in the Red-Room after an incident with her cousin, for which she takes the blame. As the years pass and Jane grows into a young woman, she is sent to Thornfield to work as a governess and, in the passage, is being shown around the estate. In the Red Room and at Thornfield hall, Bronte establishes a typical gloomy, gothic setting to create suspense and terror. Charlotte Bronte uses powerfully gothic descriptions of objects especially in the Red -Room. The name seems more important because of the alliteration and the fact that the room is identified as ‘red’ makes the reader feel that it is perhaps dangerous. The colour is often associated with blood and death, both of which create fear for the reader. We are told by the narrator that â€Å"The red-room was a square chamber, very seldom slept in, I might say never†. The use of the word †chamber† makes it sound much larger and grander and perhaps more uninviting than a regular room. The fact that the room is hardly ever slept in suggests that it is abandoned by all human company and creates a tense mood for the reader raising several questions about its safety. Bronte, therefore, uses colour to reflect the turmoil of emotions such as rage, fear and frustration which Jane is now experiencing. The objects which Charlotte Bronte describes in the Red Roo m create a typical gothic environment. We are told that the room is decorated very darkly. ‘The chairs were of darkly polished old mahogany’, which suggests that the furniture in the room is sombre, old and heavy. Colours associated with the gothic are generally darker shades, and the Red Room purposely creates images in the reader’s mind of gloomy objects to create a depressing atmosphere. When the writer describes the bed as â€Å"glar(ing) white† and the â€Å"snowy Marseilles counterpane†, this creates a contrast to the surrounding redness of the rest of the room. â€Å"Glared white† uses personification to describe the bedding as antagonistic to Jane as if it is watching her. This creates more torment for the reader. Even though the colour white might seem a much more optimistic colour than red, here it is used to create negative thoughts. The â€Å"snowy white counterpane† presents the bed as being icy cold, like death. When Jane looks in this mirror she sees a â€Å"half imp, half fairy† staring back at her. This introduces an element of the supernatural and suggests that Jane believes evil forces within the room may have possessed her and are reflected in the glass. Charlotte Bronte plays here on the superstitious fears of the reader. The fact that Jane Eyre is trapped in the red-room where her uncle died is terrifying enough but the idea that the room might have the power to drive Jane mad plays on our deepest anxieties. Death is a prominent feature of the gothic and Bronte uses the dead uncle and the possibility that he haunts the room to intensify the atmosphere. When Jane looks in this mirror is the most disturbing moment in the description of the red-room. Horror and fascination are created for Jane at this moment. The description of her †white face† and †glittering eyes of fear† show that Jane appears like a ghost to herself, the word †glittering† hinting a t madness.

Review of the movie The shape of things - Essay Example Adam (Paul Rudd) is a nerdy, unimposing English Major who works part - time as a museum guard. The stage for the rather one - sided battle of the sexes is set when he meets Evelyn (Rachel Weisz), a sexy, edgy art student. The names Adam and Eve (Lyn) are a not so subtle reminder of the original sin that paved the way for a state of eternal hostility between the sexes and emphasizes the sometimes biblical nature of the film. Evelyn has come to strip away the pretense and false modesty which symbolizes a huge statue that has its privates hidden by a leaf out of respect for the delicate sensibility of the public. Her purpose is to spray - paint a penis on the offending leaf. Shy, uncertain Adam intervenes and she disarms him with her ready charm and gives him her phone number. She then proceeds to deface the statue as she had originally intended. This random incident sets in motion the events that will bring about a drastic and gut - wrenching change in Adam's hitherto placid, uneventfu l existence. Not much of a ladies man, Adam is flattered by Evelyn's attentions and he can hardly believe she is attracted to him; therefore he clings to her with a desperate need that is at once pathetic and touching. Soon he is putty in her hands, literally. Initially she is merely a controlling girlfriend and she badgers him into losing weight, getting a more becoming haircut, losing his glasses and wearing decent clothes. She even convinces him to alter his rather large nose with the help of surgical intervention! But soon her influence over him takes a sinister turn, as he is intoxicated by her smoldering sexuality and overpowering personality and becomes nothing more than clay in her hands to be molded as she sees fit. He comes completely under her sway as she rules over him with an iron fist gradually alienating him from his friends, Philip (Frederick Waller) and Jenny (Gretchen Mol). Adam's transformation ends with a startling twist, a shattering revelation in the climax of the film. Compelling though the film is it is marred by a number of flaws. The transition from the stage to the big screen calls for certain modifications, particularly with regard to the characters and settings that are lacking in this film. This is particularly evident in the characters, who come across as rather wooden, one - dimensional and theatrical. Weisz's twisted and frightening Evelyn is a callous, notorious schemer and her motives are transparent to the viewer from the onset. Furthermore she lacks the redeeming quality of likeability which would have served to flesh out and breathe life into her character, while taking away much of its annoying plasticity. The clever twist at the end of the plot would have had more of a sting and been more forceful if the audience had not already become inured to her brand of cold, calculating cruelty. At the beginning of the film Adam says to her, "You stepped over the line, Miss" and that is exactly what she does throughout the movie, once too of ten as it turns out. Adam's chronic naivet tends to be unconvincing at times. Rudd as Adam is alternatively endearing and exasperating. He is a little too gullible to be true. I collapsed to the floor, everything went black, and I woke it to find him on top of me defiling me in the worst possible way. I snapped, I had enough of been pushed around, I would face the devil. He brought his hand back ready to strike, at the same time I brought my foot back and kicked him really hard in the crotch; he doubled over and spat out in shock. He let go of me, he was on the floor doubled over. I looked around me; there was a statue that my dad got mum on their anniversary. Sorry dad, I thought, I turned to the devil still doubled over on the floor. You ruined everything I swung the statue over the mens head. He flopped down head first on to the floor, unconscious. He was still breathing. I ran up stairs, got the backpack from under my bed. I threw all I could find in it, clothes, a few pictures of dad and mum, all the money I had, my mobile. I went down stairs with my pack; he was still unconscious in the middle of our living room floor. I ran out the front door, and caught the next train to London. I didnt know what I was doing I just know that I cant stay here anymore. I thought there must be a better life but no that is how I ended down here in the cold dirty doorway. Chapter 3 I go out around rush hour, when everyone is going to work. I wandered around the middle of the square asking people for money. Please, some change, spare change nearly all the time it is the same answer no or worse f*** off but an odd person would be nice and give me something. I am saving up for a violin. I used to play the violin quite well when dad was alive. I could make some money busking instead of begging. I dont like begging, it is degrading, but then again how much could I be degraded, I am dirty. I would do the same in the afternoon, during the day then I would go around the backs of restaurants asking for any spare food, or scraps. Over the duration of my time on the streets I have learnt which are the restaurants where it is worth asking and ones that you have no chance. After, I would go outside shops and restaurants and ask people for money. But we have just got to watch out because some shop keepers move us on, or worst comes they would get security or the police on to us. This has been my daily routine for the last so many weeks, is this the rest of my life, I cannot go back, the shame. When it was the end of the day and the traffic was thinning the young where starting to come out to party and go to night club. I was in my door of the alleyway. I watched them all having a good time, the laughing and hilarity with friends. I am alone! Chapter 4 Liz locked the door behind her, as she finished a hard days work. She had, had a bad day organising the shop, the accounts, helping out customers. Does this look alright on me? , What do you think? The clothes she sells are all the range at the moment, so her shop is really busy all day long even when it isnt the childrens holidays. Liz really need the hire someone to help out. She ran down the steps.. * I watched the lady closing up a shop, dressed in her stylish black skirt and her expensive white blouse. She jogged down the stairs. What was she doing? She was looking at her phone as she walking into the road. There was a man in the van, paying no attention to the road. I was already running for the lady. * Liz walked out into the road, looking at the text she had got from my husband. COULD YOU PICK SOMETHING UP FOR LUNCH, he could never be bothered in make tea. Then she heard it.. she heard a bellow of a van horn. She looked around and there it was, she couldnt move, frozen to the spot. Then she heard a voice, a girl was running at here move, move out of the way he was coming at speed towards her.   I ran towards her as fast as I could, the van didnt slow down, he was not looking. Will I make it, the van was still moving at a speed. I bent over ready to tackle the lady out the path of the van. I ran in to the road shouting at her, I felt the impact of her thighs on my shoulder. She screamed, did I get to her in time. Chapter 5. I looked around me, there were clubber were all around, in shock of what they just witnessed. Just ahead of me was the lady that was in the middle of the road. She had a cut to her head but otherwise unhurt. Down the road the van stopped and the driver came running over to me. Everyone was talking to me at once, everything was a blur. Someone helped me up; he was saying something to me, I couldnt make it out. The lady came over and sat down beside me, she hugged me and whispered to me in my ear thank you, thank you for saving my life, how could I ever repay you. I was still in shock I tried to stand up but just flopped back down. The lady and the man from the van gave me a hand up. Bring her to my house it is just over the road. The house was enormous; I looked at it in shock. I have really had enough shocks for the day. The lady just smiled at me. We went up the white marble steps up to the dark brown oak front door. They opened the door into a laminate floored hall way, with light brown walls. They took me in the living room. It was huge white walls, cream fluffy carpet, and white and cream fabric sofa. I sat down; it was so warm, I am so grateful for the warmth. I was freezing in my old, dirty doorway for a such a long time, it seemed like forever. Now I am warm and safe in a gorgeous, modern well kept house. The lady came in with some hot tea and some biscuits. She had, had her head seen to now she had a big plaster on her forehead. Her husband came in after her, with a huge smile on his face. He came up to me and said thank you, for saving my wife, if you werent there I dont know what would have happened. The van driver provided his apologies to the lady; she smiled, embraced him and showed him out of her house. She came back to the living room where I was gulping down my tea, she sat down next to her husband. She introduced herself. I am Elizabeth and this is Mike, what is your name? Can we call you family or relatives? I shook my head and whispered my name is Bethany; I left home, I am not going back. Elizabeth and Mike exchanged looks. They were in the mid thirties. Elizabeth is quite beautiful with brown hair and blue eyes. Mike looked a bit more official, he had an expensive suit on. I tried to stand up I better be off, I dont want to be a burden on you anymore I stud up and walk to the door. Where are you going? Mike said as he walked up to me. Where ever I can I replied, they are such a nice couple, and theyre doing well in life. Then they blurted out stay with us at least for tonight till you feel better, we dont have anyone else living with us. We have lots of space here; we cant let you go back out there. Please we insist you stay with us. They smiled at each other, picked up my back pack and showed me to a spare bedroom. Chapter 6 3 years later Well now I am with my new family, I love them so much. They took me in from the streets; removed my shame and understood my problems. My other family didnt look for me, they were dead to me. My new family enrolled my into school as soon as possible, gave me my own room and bought me clothes. They treat me like their daughter, a daughter they never had. I have just finished school in the centre of London called All Saints. I am walking away with 10 good GCSEs and 2 A Levels. I worked so hard to repay Elizabeth and Mike for all the generosity and kindness, they are my new family; my new mum and dad; I love them so much. I am going to Cambridge University to study science and politics and have a part time job with my mum and here fashion shop. My locket is still round my neck but now my real family are within my locket and close to my heart. I still love my birth father but Mike and Elizabeth are my saviours. They were not blessed with children, so they adopted me as their own. The purpose of this paper is to explain the different learning styles that students may possess and to discuss the importance of planning a lesson that includes different techniques to meet the needs of individual learners. These different learning styles may include the show and tellers, seer and feelers, leader of the packs, verbal gymnasts, wandering wonderers, and movers and groovers (WEAC, 2001). The different learning styles possessed by the student can be affected by the theory of multiple intelligences. According to this theory there are 8 different ways to learn including learning through techniques like logical/mathematical, verbal/linguistic, bodily/kinesthetic, interpersonal, musical, intrapersonal, special, and naturalist (Silver, 2000). Show and Tellers I searched through many books and articles about different learning styles and found one that really got my attention. On the WEAC web site I found a page called â€Å"A symphony of learning styles.† On this page I found six learning styles. The first is the â€Å"Show and tellers† These are learners that like to read and write. They love to make up stories just to share with their friends. These learners love to recall stories that happened to them in the past. They love to share their thoughts with... ...detail. It showed every aspect and how to apply them to your classroom. Let’s assume I have a patient that has problems with depression due to issues that have happened throughout his or her life. The first question my patient responds by saying not that good. I would go into asking for more detail as to why the relationship with ones father was not good. I would learn if there was something there that would help me to help the patient with their depression. As with most of these questions the patient would be responding in a way that they feel which would help me to learn what has caused the problems and why the patient may or may not be able to let go. I could learn a lot from a person by these questions because they are questions that ask a person to open up without being so noticeable.

Can Companies Use Mentoring to Increase Employee Retention? Essay

All businesses, from an entrepreneurial start up to an established company, need mentoring. The entrepreneurs of those companies require mentoring as well. A mentor can help a fellow peer develop important business skills, support them in making important career and life decisions and put them in touch with needed network contacts. The purpose of my report is to analyze the results of putting a mentoring program in place in a company and why it can reap rewards for the employees and the organization. The key variable that I will be focusing on is employee retention since â€Å"SHRM, the Society for Human Resource Management, estimated that it costs $3,500.00 to replace one $8.00 per hour employee when all costs — recruiting, interviewing, hiring, training, reduced productivity, et cetera, were considered† (Blake 2006).
