Morgan, an instructor at the Young Men s Christian Association (Y.M.C.A) in Massachusetts, decided to combine the sports of baseball, basketball, handball, and tennis to make a game now called volleyball (at the time called mintonette). He created this game for his classes of businessmen so that they could play a sport that demanded less physical contact than the sport basketball. He used the net from tennis and raised it 6’6† high. At that time it was above the average man’s head. When a demonstrative game was being played someone pointed out that it seemed like the players were volleying the ball back and forth over the net. They said that volleyball should be the name for the sport because it is more descriptive. So, Morgan then agreed that Volleyball is a better and more descriptive name for the sport.
